William Scott
William Scott 1797-1862 was a portrait painter
born near Leicester, England. He came from a humble background with none of the automatic network of friends in high society which favoured so many artists, giving them easy access to those with money and privilege and fame. He painted portraits of those with enough money to sit for him mainly in Leicestershire, Manchester and Liverpool. He moved to London with his artist children, to Sussex Cottage, Park Village East, Regents Park. This became home and studio and where artists such as Millais and Tenniel came to study. How good was he? Well - how does one judge? He earned a good income from his work. Fellow artists chose him to paint their portraits. He exhibited in The Royal Academy, London and The Walker Gallery, Liverpool And he taught, with some of his pupils going on to achieve world wide fame . |
