Name Confusion
There are name confusions over William, Wallace, Walter etc Scott and also over Emily Scott
Because father and son are both called William there is inevitably confusion
My belief is that William the father sometimes called himself Walter when exhibiting at the same time as his son William Wallace.
Sometimes there appears to be paintings of the same subject by more than one member of the family. Perhaps they have been wrongly assigned or perhaps the sitter came to Sussex Cottage their studio and was painted by more than one of them at the same time?
There was also William Henry Stothard Scott 1782-1858 based in Brighton who painted scenes mainly of Sussex. His son John Henderson Scott 1829- 1886 was also a landscape artist based in Sussex.
Below are some examples of name confusion
ROBERT MOFFAT
An example is Robert Moffat the father in law of Dr Livingston the explorer -see images below

The National Portrait Gallery in London has a portrait of Moffat which they say is by William Scott
The Portrait Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh has a different portrait of Robert Moffatt which they say is by William Wallace Scott.
If one looks at the two paintings above the faces look remarkably similar!
Emily Scott painted the children of Moffat. He was so delighted that he gave her a book with an inscription by him at the beginning
Augustine Scott painted Dr David Livingstone, Moffat's son in law, who was from Blantyre, Scotland.
Augustine was living at Blantyre at that time.

Emily Scott
I think - but am not convinced - that there must have been two Emily Scott's working at the time, both portrait painters
There is
1. Emily Ann Scott whose history is given on this website 1827-1883 - born in Leicester and later in Sussex Cottages, Regents Park, London and later Mrs Seymour in Liverpool.
and
There is
2. Emily Scott of 23 Cannon Place, Brighton later of 14 Maddox St, Regent Park, London
She may be a daughter of William Henry Stothard Scott - mentioned above
